What is Family Reunification?

Family Reunification refers to the entrance and residency in Malta of family members of a foreign person who is already legally residing in Malta and this for the purpose to maintain the family unit, despite when the family relationship began.

The right of family members of third-country nationals to join their sponsor, who has immigrated to Malta, has two essential features. The first one is that the sponsor should have reasonable prospects of permanent residence and stable resources which would enable him/her to maintain himself and his family members.

Who are considered to be Family Members?

  1. Spouse: The legal spouse of the sponsor, if they are married as a monogamous couple and has at least twenty-one (21) years old. If the sponsor is already married, marriages that are polygamous are not recognised in Malta.
  2. Minor Children: The sponsor’s and their spouse’s children must be under the age of eighteen (18), including adopted children
  3. Dependents who are Single Adults: If the sponsor can demonstrate that the single adult family member is financially or physically reliant on them.

Eligibility Criteria under Family Reunification Application

  • Valid Residence Permit and Proof of relationship: The sponsor must hold a residence permit valid for at least one year, also sponsor needs to provide a proof of family relationship, identification documents such as a birth certificate, marriage certificate. Etc.
